In 1934 Rietveld constructed te earliest pieces of crate furniture out of 'crate wood'. Crate wood consists of packing materials which he re-used in this specific way. In the nineteen-thirties, years of economic cirsis, nothing was wasted. It was revolutionary for those days to sell the crate chair as a do-it-yourself kit, and that it was deliverable in various colors.
