Description

Based on careful observations of how people use things, Aldo Bakker has created a series of table porcelain ware—an oil can, salt cellar, oil platter, vinegar flask and water carafe. Their graceful forms effortlessly refine our gestures at the table.

Aldo Bakker
The approach of Aldo Bakker (Amersfoort 1971) can best be described as designing from the inside out. He aims to evoke interaction with his public on multiple senses. Haptic experiences caused by texture, depth, mirroring and weight. His tools of influence are his outspoken love for materials and his never-ending determination to understand craftsmanship. Combined with his timeless urge for perfection, his objects lack a typical ‘handmade’ impression, even contrarily. The almost endless process of their realisation gives them a sense of ‘inhuman’ belonging, questioning their own existence.
His works are in the collection of V&A Museum in London, Die neue Sammlung München, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Boijmans van Beuningen Rotterdam, Zuiderzee Museum Enkhuizen, Museum de Lakenhal Leiden, SMS ’s Hertogenbosch, Silver Museum Schoonhoven and in several private collections. In the summer of 2010, Aldo will have his first solo show, Aldo Bakker Creatures ‘studies for existence’ at Villa Noailles in Hyeres, France. Recent awards include the Dutch Design Award 2009, the first prize DDA in the category of porcelain table wear in 2009, and the first prize European Glass Context in Denmark in 2008. An autodidact himself, Aldo Bakker has been teaching at the Design Academy Eindhoven since 2002.
