SUMMARY:Daniel Szalai — NOVOGEN: 166 hens\, 166 individuals
DESCRIPTION:Droog presents Novogen\, a compelling photographic project by the Hungarian artist Daniel Szalai\, which explores the hidden relationship between humans\, animals\, and the pharmaceutical industry. \nCentral to the project is the Novogen White chicken\, which has been specially bred for its eggs\, which are used in the production of vaccines and other pharmaceutical products. Szalai photographed 166 hens individually against a neutral background. What appears at first glance to be an almost scientific catalogue transforms\, upon closer inspection\, into a series of individual portraits. No two chickens are alike. \nThis is precisely where the power of the project lies. These animals are part of a highly standardised production system in which they are valued primarily for their biological function. Szalai temporarily removes them from this anonymous context\, giving each animal its own presence. Differences in posture\, gaze\, plumage\, and character suddenly become visible. \nAlongside the portraits\, Novogen features photographs that trace the journey of the eggs within the pharmaceutical industry. By doing so\, Szalai connects the individual animal to a technological system in which nature\, science\, and the economy are increasingly intertwined. Novogen\, therefore\, raises questions that extend beyond the poultry industry. \nWhat happens when living organisms become part of an industrial production chain? Where does the line lie between care\, scientific progress\, and exploitation? And how do we view an animal once it is no longer anonymous\, but confronts us as an individual? \nNovogen was exhibited in 2025 at the Can Reon Festival of Art and Music in Tiana\, near Barcelona\, and was curated by Renny Ramakers\, co-founder of Droog. From September 2026\, the project will be on display at the Droog Gallery.

SUMMARY:CinemAsia: Under a Harvest Moon
DESCRIPTION:In many cultures\, the spirit of the full moon symbolises collective reunion\, renewal and celebration. Across the mid-autumn festival\, lantern parades\, harvest rituals\, and family traditions\, it marks a time imbued with folklore and a sense of wonder. How might we re-embrace these practices of dreaming and collective imagining in the everyday\, both within and beyond our own traditions?  \nBringing together six films from Asia and the diaspora which playfully explore mythical histories\, fantasies and the future\, we want to reflect on the importance of gathering\, gratitude\, and re-connection under the harvest moon. \nThe screening will be followed by a lantern workshop led by Alina Tang\, the founder of Pansy\, a ceramic & illustration studio in Amsterdam. Everyone will receive a small lantern to craft whilst collectively reflecting on the program’s themes and new beginnings. Participation in the workshop is optional\, but all are welcome to join!  \nDoors open: 19:00 \nShort film programme: 19:30 – 21:00  \nWorkshop: 21:00 – 22:00  \nShort Film List (total run-time: 85 mins): \nFull Month \nAsh Goh Hua | Singapore | 2025 | 14’  \nFollowing the birth of her niece\, Jing returns to Singapore for the newborn’s full month celebration. SUMMARY:Funny Vidi Vici Presents: Fresh Takes
DESCRIPTION:Six of Amsterdam’s funniest up-and-coming comedians take the stage with their best material\, plus a few bold\, brand-new jokes never heard before.\n\nHosted by Rami Nima\, Fresh Takes is a curated comedy night for people who like sharp jokes\, strange thoughts\, and comedians you’ll want to say you saw early.\n\nJoin us at Droog in Amsterdam on 29 September 2026.\n\n\nBianca:\nDry\, observational stand-up from an introvert who has already overthought this bio. Bianca started comedy in September 2025 and was a 2025 TUNA Newbie of the Year finalist. She did not win. You may have gathered that from the word “finalist.”\n\n\n\nIsa:\nBorn by the Caspian Sea\, named wrongly\, and Amsterdam-based. Isa tries to make sense of philosophy\, religion\, and everyday absurdity through satire and awkward humor.\n\n \n\n\n\nLennard:\n“No matter your age\, it’s never too late to give up on your dreams.”\n\nAt age 43\, Lennard finally gave up his life’s mission of being one of the cool kids and switched to comedy instead.\nHe now spends his days writing jokes. Please don’t tell his boss.\nLennard has yet to win any awards\, or recognition\, or respect\, or dignity\, but he firmly believes you can achieve anything if you just put your mind to it. Case in point: he did a push-up once.\n \n\n\n\n\nThomas:\nThomas recently started getting up on stages. Sometimes he’s a storyteller\, other times a poet\, today he’s a comedian. They say he’s unapologetically gay. That’s not true. He apologises in advance.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nValerie:\nValerie Tan is a very young (24 years) and very new (5 months) comedian from Amsterdam. They are trying to become their best self and apparently that includes taking life changing medication\, forgiving\, and telling jokes. They are happy just to be included 🙂\n\n\n\nAlice:\nOriginally from France\, Alice Raffegeau jokes that she’s a rare breed (or bread?): a French person who speaks English.\n\nHer comedy is witty and observational\, with a fun\, chatty style and infectious energy on stage.

SUMMARY:Who is Looking?
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the interactive lecture and screening about working with images\, with Gustav Bengtsson. This lecture invites you into a shared exploration of how we understand and produce images \, touching on the use of AI\, the context of research with images\, and the relationship with critical theory.\n\n\nAt the heart of the event is a curiosity about perception and authorship: who looks\, and from where? The key method is the use of one’s own body together with the camera as a source of knowledge\, not merely as a tool for documentation\, but as an active participant in the process of meaning-making.\n\n\nWhether you come from an artistic\, academic\, or practice-based background\, this workshop offers a space to reflect on and experiment with the ways images think\, feel\, and communicate.\n\n\nAbout the artist \nGustav Bengtsson is a Swedish video artist\, filmmaker\, curator\, and educator based in Amsterdam. Working across experimental film\, animation\, video art\, and research\, his practice explores the body\, history\, power and alternative ways of storyteling. He regularly gives workshops and lectures on video art\, video essays\, and experimental filmmaking at venues including Memphis Brooks Art Museum\, Linköpings University\, Gothenburg University\, VU Art Science Galery in Amsterdam\, and University of East London. He curates the festival Video (H)our(s)\, dedicated to underground and artist-driven moving image practices.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Escape
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder how the past conversations with the present? Tonight’s program acts as a sonic time machine. It is a night of brilliant contrasts. Old rules are broken\, reimagined\, and celebrated. The invitation is to be present in this shared space. Lose all sense of time within these echoes\, look through the illusion of years\, and find what remains in the quiet of now.\n\nLudwig van Beethoven’s Andante & Variations was originally for mandolin and harpsichord. This rare\, youthful gem gets a sleek makeover via Steven Isserlis’s arrangement.\n\nThrough Schnittke\, the melodies of the past meet the “cracks” of the modern world. In a restless era\, why is there such a craving for the “Old Style”? Is it a longing for another century\, or a fascination with the stillness found only within Lost Time? \nOttorino Respighi’s captures the raw\, burning essence of late-Romantic passion. This piece demands total emotional vulnerability. It doesn’t hold back. It is a deeply romantic\, cinematic experience. \nViolin: Wan-ru Cheng \nPiano: Vicky Juo \n\nPROGRAM \nLudwig van Beethoven (arr. Isserlis): Andante & Variations for Violin & Piano \nAlfred Schnittke: Suit in the old style \nOttorino Respighi: Sonata in B minor \nAlfred Schnittke: Polka

SUMMARY:Jodi Gilbert and the Wayfaring Strangers
DESCRIPTION:Jodi G and the Wayfaring Strangers \nJodi Gilbert-voice/ dulcimer/ autoharp/ spoons; Laura Polence-voice /melodica/ukelele/ spoons;  Mary Oliver-violin/viola voice;  Joost Buis-lap steel guitar/voice; Paul Pallesen- guitar/voice. \nIt is an inclusive music sung and played by voices and instruments lifted in friendship to express love\, loss\, and story-telling. All musicians in the band are at home with composed music as well as improvised music. \n In this time of unrest and despair in the cruelty of humanity\, the solace and the happiness found in the traditional musics reminds one of the connections between humans as they go through hardships and joy. Music as a way to connect to one’s past to one’s ancestry and to find a way to connect with friends and colleagues through music. \nGilbert is a disciplined singer who can sing old Irish songs like My Lagan Love\, and Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies with the best of them. But she can throw her voice into the cracks and fissures of an improvising musical trio and add immeasurably to its depth and dimension. (Thom Jurek – All Music Guide) \n \nPre-show: \nBarkin’ Birds consists of three women with a lot of instruments. They started as a country trio\, but soon fanned and bounced in all directions: Blue-grass\, folk\, swing\, jazz\, pop… Even an unadulterated schlager is not missing from their repertoire. \nThree altos\, so a nice\, warm sound. Three altos? Yes\, you can\, come and listen! \nhttps://www.droog.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/signal-2026-07-15-11-41-29-484_003.mp4\nMirjam Oldenhave: vocals\, guitar\, bass\, cajonita \nIneke van Straeten: Vocals \nDominique Romeny: vocals\, guitar\, banjo\, mandolin

SUMMARY:Grains of Sand
DESCRIPTION:Filmed over eight years\, Grains of Sand accompanies the filmmaker’s mother and mother-in-law\, artists and close friends\, as they enter their ninth decade. Through conversation\, memories and artwork\, along with reflections by the filmmaker herself\, they create together this positive\, different kind of “coming-of-age” story.\n \nMargot and Barbara\, close friends and artists\, and the director’s mother & mother-in-law\, meet for a work retreat in a stone farmhouse in the German countryside. They are both on the cusp of their ninth decade. As they begin to work on the large stones they have brought to sculpt\, they embark on a conversation about creativity and aging\, exploring what it means for them to arrive at this stage of their lives. Their wrinkled hands become dusty as they scrape and chisel the stones. \n \nThe farmhouse becomes a yearly ritual where the women share their pasts\, discuss their artistic processes\, and reflect on their changing roles as artists\, women\, and mothers. Margot and Barbara aren’t looking back on their lives. They are living them. \nSarah Gross\, Director/Producer\nDirector and Producer Sarah Gross’ works have been shown in festivals around the world and broadcast on PBS nationally and Deutsche Welle internationally. Grains of Sand is her fourth feature-length documentary. Past films include documentary features Brown Bread and A Growing Thing and the documentary series Connection. Her production company Bugle Films is based in Berlin\, Germany. \n \nThe Collage Workshop \nArt for Barbara and Margot is a way of living. Throughout the film\, art transcends the sensual experience to become also a way of reflecting on life itself. Building on the film\, Collage Workshop participants will have a chance to experiment in a tactile\, visual realm. We discuss scenes from the film which continue to resonate for us\, and at the same time begin to play with color and shapes on the page. We can use the materials in front of us to fold in thoughts\, memories and references to lived events. Participants find themselves sharing aspects of who they are and connecting with the other participants in unexpected ways. The conversation with those around us at the table becomes a dialogue with ourselves\, a kind of collage self-portrait in the materials we bring to paper.
