SUMMARY:ASA Ritual × Droog: Letting Go
DESCRIPTION:ASA Ritual is honoured to host a special edition in collaboration with the cultural program manager Alya from Droog. \nASA Ritual and Droog have long shared an appreciation for creating intimate\, community-rooted experiences. This edition grew from a simple conversation. \nWhen Asako from ASA Ritual asked Alya about her recent journey through Japan\, she spoke about one place that had particularly stayed with her: the Adachi Museum of Art in Shimane\, renowned for its extraordinary Japanese garden. Although every element appears meticulously maintained\, the philosophy behind the garden is not to impose perfection on nature\, but to thoroughly observe it with great respect and allow it to reveal its own beauty. The diligent care of the garden is ultimately an act of respect—for both nature itself and the visitors who come to experience it. \nThat conversation resonated deeply with the philosophy behind ASA Ritual. \n \nIn ASA Ritual\, Japanese calligraphy is not approached as a discipline of mastering beautiful characters. Instead\, it becomes an invitation to let go of control and allow the brush\, the ink and your own inner state to guide each brushstroke. Rather than striving to write the “correct” or “perfect” character\, guests are invited to embrace whatever naturally emerges. In this sense\, your calligraphy becomes a reflection of the self. \nThroughout this tranquil afternoon\, we will explore Japanese philosophy through calligraphy\, dialogue and a tasting of a few pieces of ASA’s signature plant-based sushi. Together\, we will reflect on living in awe of nature\, embracing impermanence\, and discovering the beauty of letting go. \nProgramme (approximately 2 hours) \n* Welcome and introduction \n* Japanese calligraphy experience \n* Guided dialogue moderated by Asako \n* Tasting of ASA’s signature plant-based sushi \n \n Asako Kato is an artist who designs and hosts this ritual. After seven years of dedicated practice in plant-based sushi\, she began shaping ASA Ritual — an experience informed by Japanese ways of being\, family-rooted calligraphy traditions\, artisanal vegetable sushi\, and a focus on how people come into calmness\, open up\, and engage in more honest dialogue \nPhoto credit: Shahrnaz Javid

SUMMARY:Hi\, Handsome | Southern Skies EP Launch
DESCRIPTION:Hi\, Handsome are a NZ/Irish-born\, Amsterdam-based duo made up of Jesse Finn and Daragh Gillen. Their music sits somewhere between indie-pop\, folk\, and alt-country\, with close harmonies\, rough edges\, and songs that blur confession with daydream. \nInfluenced by artists like Fleetwood Mac\, Alexi Murdoch\, Kacey Musgraves\, and Johnny Cash\, Hi\, Handsome blend storytelling with atmosphere\, writing about queerness\, mental health\, desire\, shame\, and all the complicated stuff in between. \nJesse\, originally from Wellington\, New Zealand\, spent years fronting synth-pop band Opal House before moving to Amsterdam and starting again. Daragh\, from Belfast\, Ireland\, brings a fine tuned musical instinct that spans traditional Irish\, pop\, electronic\, and heavier sounds. \nTheir debut EP Southern Skies lands this August. Until then\, stream their single “Blood Burn”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n  \nOpening Act: \nMel Artuz (real name Melvin Dalati) is an Italian singer of Filipino and Lebanese descent. \nMel’s musical foundation began early at the age of 10\, with classical flute training at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan. He didn’t complete his studies there\, choosing instead to pursue a dream of living abroad. Singing\, though\, was never something he had to learn. It was woven into daily life growing up in a Filipino family\, where music was simply part of being together. \nFor the past ten years\, Mel has called Amsterdam home. It’s there that he’s quietly built a personal songwriting practice\, writing for himself as a way to process and express his own experience. He’s also a member of the Amsterdam Gay Men’s Chorus\, a community that has given him space to grow and share his talent alongside others. \n \nSaturday 19 September 2026\n\nDoors @ 19.45 \nOpening Act @ 20.15 \nHi\, Handsome @ 20.45

SUMMARY:Who is Looking?
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the interactive lecture and screening about working with images\, with Gustav Bengtsson. This lecture invites you into a shared exploration of how we understand and produce images \, touching on the use of AI\, the context of research with images\, and the relationship with critical theory.\n\n\nAt the heart of the event is a curiosity about perception and authorship: who looks\, and from where? The key method is the use of one’s own body together with the camera as a source of knowledge\, not merely as a tool for documentation\, but as an active participant in the process of meaning-making.\n\n\nWhether you come from an artistic\, academic\, or practice-based background\, this workshop offers a space to reflect on and experiment with the ways images think\, feel\, and communicate.\n\n\nAbout the artist \nGustav Bengtsson is a Swedish video artist\, filmmaker\, curator\, and educator based in Amsterdam. Working across experimental film\, animation\, video art\, and research\, his practice explores the body\, history\, power and alternative ways of storyteling. He regularly gives workshops and lectures on video art\, video essays\, and experimental filmmaking at venues including Memphis Brooks Art Museum\, Linköpings University\, Gothenburg University\, VU Art Science Galery in Amsterdam\, and University of East London. He curates the festival Video (H)our(s)\, dedicated to underground and artist-driven moving image practices.

SUMMARY:Tuesday Escape
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder how the past conversations with the present? Tonight’s program acts as a sonic time machine. It is a night of brilliant contrasts. Old rules are broken\, reimagined\, and celebrated. The invitation is to be present in this shared space. Lose all sense of time within these echoes\, look through the illusion of years\, and find what remains in the quiet of now.\n\nLudwig van Beethoven’s Andante & Variations was originally for mandolin and harpsichord. This rare\, youthful gem gets a sleek makeover via Steven Isserlis’s arrangement.\n\nThrough Schnittke\, the melodies of the past meet the “cracks” of the modern world. In a restless era\, why is there such a craving for the “Old Style”? Is it a longing for another century\, or a fascination with the stillness found only within Lost Time? \nOttorino Respighi’s captures the raw\, burning essence of late-Romantic passion. This piece demands total emotional vulnerability. It doesn’t hold back. It is a deeply romantic\, cinematic experience. \nViolin: Wan-ru Cheng \nPiano: Vicky Juo \n\nPROGRAM \nLudwig van Beethoven (arr. Isserlis): Andante & Variations for Violin & Piano \nAlfred Schnittke: Suit in the old style \nOttorino Respighi: Sonata in B minor \nAlfred Schnittke: Polka
