Artist Talks: Ariane Loze, Danae Stratou, Desiree Dolron, and Efrat Zehavi

this is a past event

Four artists will go in conversation with Yev Kravt about their work exhibited at the gallery @droog at the ME/YOU, US/THEM exhibition. From the border politics of nation-states to the interactions of individuals, the four artists approach the theme through their own perspectives. The talks will be held in both English and Dutch.

Ariane Loze
Belgian visual artist Ariane Loze invites the viewer to actively create a story from seemingly unrelated images, using the cinematographic principles of shot and counter-shot, the assumed continuity of movement, and the suggestion of a narrative. In her work ‘Our Cold Loves,‘ she examines the quest for love and intimacy through dating apps such as Tinder.

Danae Stratou
Danae Stratou is an installation artist born in Athens. Danae’s work consists of large-scale installations and audio-visual environments. For ‘Cut – 7 Dividing Lines,’ she travelled 60,000 km across the globe to capture the lives of populations divided by borders originating from socio-political, economic, nationalist, or religious tensions, from Cyprus to Eritrea, from Palestine to Kashmir. As the artist calls them, seven open wounds: seven lines on the planet where historical tensions have shaped impenetrable divisions, founded on unresolved issues and relentless claims.

Desirée Dolron
Desirée Dolron is a Dutch photographer and filmmaker. Her work ranges from documentary photography and still lifes to portraiture and film. In the exhibition, her work ‘Monarch‘ will be shown. Every year, Monarch butterflies travel a distance of 4,500 kilometres, from Canada to Mexico and back: one of the most striking animal migrations on the planet. But the butterflies are having an increasingly difficult time due to the destruction of nature along their route through climate change and pollution.

Efrat Zehavi
Efrat Zehavi is a visual and performance artist based in Rotterdam. She is known for the expressive portraits in coloured plasticine that she makes on the spot in public locations. Her themes are origin, family, and migration. Having moved to Rotterdam from Haifa in 2001, she became fascinated by the facial variations within the 170 different nationalities surrounding her. This led her to develop ‘Passportraits,’ an ongoing travelling performance.
