Skin, 2009
Skin is a furniture series by Nacho Carbonell for Droog Design, first presented in 2009. The project brings furniture to life through play, perception, and interaction, allowing everyday objects to respond visibly to what surrounds them.
Chairs and tables are wrapped in a thin, elastic outer layer that stretches over their structure and over the things you keep around you, hiding yet subtly revealing daily messes. This flexible skin reacts instantly, forming soft bulges and unexpected contours that make what is usually concealed partially visible. The surface becomes an expressive, constantly changing landscape shaped by use, touch, and chance.
The forms of the pieces, as well as their unusual heights, are inspired by fantasy and dreams. By altering proportions and viewpoints, Carbonell aims to shift the way we look at familiar objects and the spaces they inhabit.
With the Skin collection, Nacho Carbonell seeks to revive curiosity, encouraging users to imagine what might be hidden beneath the surface and to engage with furniture in a playful, almost childlike way. Shown during Milan Design Week, the series stood out for its experimental use of materials and its poetic reinterpretation of everyday domestic life.
