Door Handles for Valli & Valli

In 2002, Valli & Valli, a renowned Italian manufacturer of architectural hardware, collaborated with Dutch design collective Droog to curate an innovative series of door handles that seamlessly blend functionality with conceptual design. This partnership invited designers to reimagine the door handle not merely as a utilitarian object but as a medium for artistic and communicative expression.

One standout design from this collection is by Ronald Lewerissa of Flex Development. His approach emphasises the production process and material choice, resulting in a metal handle crafted using laser-cutting techniques. This method minimises the number of components and allows for the integration of logos or other information directly onto the handle’s surface, exemplifying a design where concept dictates form.

Another notable contribution comes from Joost Grootens, who designed a Braille door handle. By incorporating Braille signage on the reverse side of existing handles, Grootens introduces a layer of tactile communication, enhancing accessibility and user interaction.

These designs reflect Valli & Valli’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional hardware design, transforming everyday objects into thoughtful, engaging experiences.
