Felt Washbasin by Dick van Hoff
Dick van Hoff
Felt Washbasin, 1996
At first glance, the washbasin follows a recognisable form. Still, instead of ceramic or metal, it is made from felt strengthened with polyester resin, turning a soft and flexible material into a rigid, functional structure. By using felt, traditionally hidden within construction as a sealing material, van Hoff brings attention to something usually overlooked and gives it a central role.
The basin is assembled from separate pieces that are clearly stitched together with visible black thread, making the construction process part of the design itself. These seams are not concealed but emphasised, adding a handcrafted quality and visual rhythm to the object. The Felt Washbasin plays with contrasts between soft and hard, industrial and handmade.
