Accidental Carpet, 2007
Atelier Remy & Veenhuizen gave old woollen blankets a second life, cutting and reassembling them into a bold and expressive textile surface, back in 2007. The carpet is made from discarded woollen blankets that are cut into loose, painterly strokes and glued by hand onto a textile base, creating a dense, tactile surface with rich layers of colour and texture.
The process is intentionally open and uncontrolled. Because each carpet is assembled using whatever blankets are available at the time of production, no two pieces are ever the same. The resulting forms appear organic and spontaneous, resembling abstract landscapes or living structures rather than traditional decorative patterns.
Accidental Carpet was created to introduce warmth, softness, and visual stimulation into institutional environments, including a children’s epilepsy clinic. By transforming familiar, worn materials into a vibrant and comforting object, the project reflects Atelier Remy & Veenhuizen’s broader design approach—one that values reuse, intuition, and emotional impact over perfection or uniformity.
