Apple Juice Bottle Birdhouse by Marcel Wanders

Apple Juice Bottle Birdhouse,

When locally produced apple juice has been consumed, the ceramic bottle can live its second life as a nest box for the many birds of the region.

‘I have focused on products that might contribute to the special character of the region, not just because this makes the area even more attractive, but also since this region has very special qualities that might be unique and important to the rest of the world’, — Marcel Wanders.

The idea behind the project is both practical and playful. Instead of treating packaging as disposable, the bottle is designed to stay useful even after the drink is gone. By mounting the ceramic bottle outside, the opening in its side becomes an entrance for small birds, turning the empty container into a safe place for nesting. What would usually become waste instead becomes part of a garden environment.

This project reflects Marcel Wanders’ approach to design, which often combines creativity, storytelling, and everyday objects. He often explores ways to make people look at ordinary things differently, encouraging them to see beauty and value in simple materials and familiar forms.

In the end, the Apple Juice Bottle Birdhouse is a small but thoughtful example of how design can change the way we interact with everyday items. A simple bottle becomes something more meaningful — an object that continues to exist in our surroundings long after its original purpose is fulfilled.
