Chair with Holes by Gijs Bakker
Gijs Bakker
Chair with Holes, 1989
Gijs Bakker transforms a plain maple chair into a striking study in form and function. By systematically drilling holes of varying sizes: smaller where strength is needed most, Bakker reduced the chair’s weight by nearly a third. This minimalist intervention not only lightens the structure but introduces a unique visual rhythm, sparking a design principle later echoed in his other creations, from vases to candelabras.
The Chair with Holes is part of the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen collection.
