Hardware Collection: Construct me! by Droog

Construct Me! – Hardware Collection by Droog works with the smallest and most overlooked elements of design: everyday hardware. Presented during Milan Design Week 2015, the project focuses on familiar items such as screws, nails, hinges, and fasteners, transforming them from purely functional components into expressive and engaging design objects.

Traditionally, hardware is meant to be invisible, even hidden within structures and rarely considered part of the aesthetic experience. Construct Me! challenges this idea by bringing these elements to the forefront. Each piece in the collection is redesigned with attention to form, usability, and character. Subtle changes in shape, colour, and detail turn ordinary tools into objects that invite interaction and add personality to the act of building.

The collection combines practicality with playfulness. Some designs improve usability, while others introduce unexpected visual features that make construction more intuitive or enjoyable. By doing so, Droog highlights how even the smallest components can influence the overall experience of making and assembling objects.

Presented in a setting inspired by a typical hardware store, the project reinforces its connection to everyday life. At the same time, it encourages both designers and users to reconsider the role of these often unnoticed elements. Hardware is no longer just a means to an end, but an integral part of design that can communicate ideas, enhance functionality, and bring a sense of creativity to the process.

With Construct Me!, Droog demonstrates that meaningful design does not always require large gestures. Sometimes, rethinking the simplest components can have the greatest impact, revealing new possibilities in the most familiar objects.
