Saving Grace Lamps by Adrien Rovero

Knitted Lamp, 2008

Saving Grace is a lamp series designed by Adrien Rovero for Droog Design. Created in 2008 and part of Droog’s design archive, the project reconsiders the aesthetic potential of energy-saving light bulbs, and was later highlighted in design coverage of Droog’s A Touch of Green presentation at Milan design events, where it featured within broader explorations of sustainable lighting.

Often regarded as awkward or unattractive, energy-saving bulbs become the starting point for the design. Rovero’s Saving Grace series takes advantage of their distinct qualities, shaping the glass to control the light and to aesthetically elevate the technology itself. The carefully formed shades embrace the bulbs’ characteristic shapes, allowing the light to glow softly through the material and transforming a purely functional object into a considered design piece.

Each lamp is made from borosilicate glass and sandblasted on both the inside and outside, creating a gentle, diffused light that emphasises atmosphere as much as efficiency.
