Explore cameraless filmmaking techniques using 35mm and 16mm found footage

This workshop invites participants to explore cameraless filmmaking techniques using 35mm and 16mm found footage. Over the course of a day, you will decompose, desquamate, soak, layer, scratch, make collages, décollages, découpages, and recollages with discarded film materials. You will investigate the material and chemical properties of the film strip, as well as the poetic possibilities that lie in recycling and reassembling frames.

We invite you to make new pictural worlds from recuperated cinematic fragments, to find a new play of rhythms and structures!

The workshop will be taught by Michael Fleming, an Amsterdam-based visual artist and filmmaker whose practice is centred around the appropriation and alteration of mass-consumption images, turning their meaning and surface inside out to arrive in phantasmagorical filmic realms.

Structure of the workshop:

  1. Part 1: Theoretical introduction to experimental cinema and to different approaches to cameraless filmmaking. Short films will be screened and discussed.

  2. Part 2: Participants will explore various techniques individually under the guidance of Michael Fleming and make a short film.

  3. Part 3: Final discussion of the works created during the day.

No previous experience working with analog is needed.
