Bone Chair by Joris Laarman

Bone Chair, 2008

Joris Laarman’s design is a pioneering piece crafted from aluminium, inspired by the natural growth patterns of bones. Like skeletal structures, the chair’s form is determined by where strength is most needed: material accumulates in high-stress areas and recedes in low-stress zones.

This innovative approach was made possible through advanced engineering software originally developed for the automotive industry to reduce weight while maintaining strength. By applying this technology to furniture design, Laarman reimagines traditional design methods, achieving a balance of structural efficiency, organic beauty, and minimal material use.
