Box-o-rama, 2011

This system turns furniture design into a digital building game. Developed by EventArchitectuur with Tal Erez, the system invited users to drag, resize, and stack virtual boxes until they had created their own shelf, cabinet, or storage unit. Studio designed the interface, making the process simple enough for anyone to explore.

Once the composition was ready, the software converted it into instructions for a CNC machine. The components could be cut from a standard 122 × 244 cm sheet of wood and assembled with press-fit joints. Although the boxes followed a basic set of rules, their arrangement remained open, allowing every finished piece to look different while still being practical and structurally possible.

Commissioned in 2010, Box-o-rama was presented in Milan in 2011 as part of Droog’s Design for Download project. Its S, M, and L versions were available from 2012 to 2018, and the system later appeared in a major exhibition about DIY furniture at Berlin’s Bröhan Museum.
