Plaited Fence by Martín Ruiz Azúa
Plaited Fence addresses waste by assigning it a new, positive meaning. The project proposes a fencing system for public space into which passers-by can plait discarded materials such as plastic bags, newspapers, or plastic bottles. In this way, waste drifting through the city acquires an aesthetic second life, and the fence becomes a site of creative, communal participation rather than a passive or barren barrier.
The work was realised in Amsterdam as part of Urban Play – Droog Event 2 (2008), a series of design-driven public interventions that investigated urban life through creativity, participation, and social interaction.
Martín Ruiz Azúa graduated in 1995 from the University of Barcelona with a degree in Fine Arts and Design. Alongside his design practice, he teaches History of Design at the Elisava School in Barcelona.
Ruiz Azúa is an uncompromising designer. Through research, he arrives at almost immaterial forms that conceptually address ecological, economic, social, and human aspects. Rather than providing marketable solutions, his work poses questions, presents statements and ideas, and provokes reflection.
