Playing with Electricity, 2011

Playing with Electricity is a design project by EventArchitectuur, developed in collaboration with Droog Design and presented in 2011 as part of Droog’s Design for Download initiative at the Salone del Mobile in Milan.

The project rethinks the everyday electrical socket, normally invisible and purely functional, as a playful and expressive design element. By proposing four alternative socket designs, Playing with Electricity invites users to engage with electricity more consciously and imaginatively, turning a mundane necessity into a point of interaction and customisation.

Produced through digital design and 3D printing, the socket designs were released as downloadable files, allowing users to fabricate, adapt, and share them independently. Through this open-source approach, Playing with Electricity reflects Droog’s ongoing interest in redefining authorship, production, and distribution in design, shifting control from manufacturer to user.
