Simpledoubledeux is a modular bed system that explores flexibility, simplicity, and intelligent use of material. Originally conceived as a custom prototype for the Pigniu House, a residential project in Switzerland, the bed was developed in response to the need for adaptable living solutions that could evolve with changing spatial and domestic requirements.

The design is based on two lightweight, moulded plywood platforms that can be used independently as single beds or effortlessly combined to form a double bed. This transformation requires no tools, hardware, or mechanical systems; instead, the bed relies on precise proportions and intuitive assembly. The clarity of the construction allows one person to move and reconfigure the elements with ease, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on practicality and everyday usability.

Material choice plays a central role in Simpledoubledeux. The use of moulded plywood ensures structural strength while maintaining a reduced visual and physical weight. The exposed construction and restrained formal language reflect DGJ’s architectural approach, where function, structure, and material expression are closely aligned. The result is a piece of furniture that feels both architectural and domestic, robust yet understated.

In 2008, the design received international recognition through its inclusion in the I.D. Annual Design Review, highlighting its relevance within contemporary furniture design. Today, Simpledoubledeux stands as an example of how architectural thinking can be translated into furniture, offering a durable, adaptable, and timeless response to compact and flexible living.
