Table Tennis Fence by NEXT Architects
NEXT Architects
Table Tennis Fence, 2001
Why let a fence keep neighbours apart when it could start a game? Designed by NEXT Architects, Table Tennis Fence places a ping-pong table directly within the boundary between two gardens. Players remain on their own side, yet the match brings them together across the divide.
The design is part of a playful series in which NEXT Architects gave ordinary fences new social roles. By transforming a barrier into shared sports equipment, the project shows how a small architectural intervention can turn separation into interaction.
The design formed part of Me, Myself & You, a project examining how everyday objects influence the way people meet, interact and protect their personal space. Rather than focusing only on appearance or materials, the exhibition treated design as a playful test of human behaviour. First shown in Milan in 2001 and later presented in Utrecht, it turned familiar encounters into unexpected opportunities for connection.
