Till Death Do Us Part, 2008

People tend to throw away objects that are still in perfect condition. To make this change efficiently, Martino d’Esposito decided to enter into a contract. He burned it in the wood of a second-hand table, selected and painted by Franck Bragigand. A legally binding contract is laser-engraved directly into the tabletop, obliging the owner to keep, use, and care for the piece for the rest of their life. By physically embedding this promise into the furniture itself, the work turns an everyday object into a symbolic and ethical statement about responsibility, emotional attachment, and sustainable consumption. Till Death Do Us Part reframes ownership as a long-term relationship, questioning how and why we discard objects that are still functional.
