Peter van der Jagt reimagined the traditional cooker as a flexible collection of individual gas rings. Designed in 2001, the burners could be connected to outlets in a tiled wall and placed wherever they were needed. Users were free to arrange several burners for a large meal or keep just one on the worktop for simpler cooking.

Developed for the wider Tile Kitchen project, created with Arnout Visser and Erik Jan Kwakkel, the design made the kitchen’s technical elements visible instead of hiding them inside cabinets. The movable metal burners were practical, easy to clean and simple to store away, leaving the surface open for other tasks. By breaking the conventional hob into separate parts, Handy Burners offered a more adaptable and informal approach to preparing food.
