Wrapped Stool by Hella Jongerius

Wrapped Stool, 1997

Jongerius used high-tech fibre coiling, which is now a very common technique in product design. The experiment was made within the Dry Tech II Project, in collaboration with Droog Design and the Technical University Delft.

It features a rounded, tubular form (approximately 42 cm high with a 31 cm diameter) made from coiled synthetic fibres — an approach that revolutionised surface treatment and structure in design. The Wrapped Stool represents Jongerius’s wider design approach: merging experimental craft methods with industrial materials to blur boundaries between soft and hard, background and object.
