Kokon Furniture by Konings & Bey

Jan Konings and Jurgen Bey
Kokon Furniture, 1997

Old wooden chairs and tables are wrapped in PVC synthetic fibres that shrink to form a taut, elastic skin around the frames, transforming examples of “desolate furniture” into ghostly new forms. Smooth PVC skin preserves the shape but hides texture, creating a uniform, sculptural look.

Each item tells a story — a chair becomes a cocoon, a chair-table hybrid suggests function and play.

  • Double‑Chair: Two wooden dining chairs merged under a single PVC skin — its sculptural silhouette emphasizes hybridity.

  • Table‑Chair: A chair with integrated tabletop — shows the playful assembly of functions.

  • Long‑Chair & Wall‑Chair: Other expanded forms in the series, demonstrating versatility and narrative materiality.

The Kokon furniture range consists not so much of prototypes; it is a range of unique pieces: familiar domestic objects get new identity through material deformation.
