Lace Table by Marcel Wanders

Lace Table, 1997
Marcel Wanders’s Lace Table is a standout piece from Droog’s experimental Dry Tech II showcase in 1997. Crafted using unusual high-tech techniques, it brings the delicate aesthetic of lace into the realm of furniture design. The table was made from Swiss lace combined with epoxy resin, then sand-blasted to achieve a rigid yet visually delicate form. This method preserved the intricate patterns of lace while making them structurally sound — a vivid example of marrying textile craft with engineering precision.
Wanders’s Lace Table turned a traditional textile into a sculptural object, showing how fabrics could be reinterpreted as solid, load-bearing elements. At first glance, the table appears soft and ornamental, but it’s surprisingly sturdy, thanks to the resin reinforcement.
Conceptually, it flips expectations: lace isn’t usually associated with furniture, yet here it’s both ornament and structure, fragility and strength.
