Waffle Screen, 2007
A softly woven 3D textile panel that acts both as structure and surface, there is no hidden frame. By combining weaving techniques with varying yarns, Boon created a waffle-like volume (approx. 10 cm deep) that, once hardened with resin, transforms into a rigid, lightweight room divider.
The design’s crisp waffle geometry is resin-finished to stiffen the fabric into a self-supporting panel. Those panels connect via edge zippers, nodding to textile traditions and enabling modular layout. Designed as a room divider, the screen is visually permeable yet spatially defining. Furthermore, its undulating 3D relief absorbs and diffuses sound, improving room acoustic qualities.
The Waffle Screen was part of Droog’s Dry Tech III (2007), a collaboration with TU Delft Aerospace, NEXT Architects, and Creative Industries Fund, exploring advanced textiles and composites. Exhibited at Droog Design, it sat alongside the Spacer Chair, demonstrating the potential of hardened 3D fabrics.
